San Diego Padres

San Diego closed their three-game set on the road in the Windy City against the Cubs hoping to avoid a sweep Wednesday. The Padres were beaten 4-3 on Tuesday night. San Diego has continued their impressive offensive numbers after being one of the best lineups last season, they’re 13th in batting average hitting .237 as a team, and are ninth in the MLB in scoring offense pushing across 4.77 runs per contest. The Padres have lost four of their last five games when scoring three or less runs. Jake Cronenworth leads the Padres with 59 hits and 18 RBI while Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado have combined for 94 hits and 61 RBI.

New York Mets

New York played the rubber game of their three-game set with Arizona on the road Wednesday afternoon. The Mets were knocked off 6-5 in 10 innings on Tuesday night. The Mets took game three off the Diamondbacks with a high-scoring 7-6 win, improving to 27-21 and extending their lead to four-games in the NL East. Despite being a first-place team, the Mets have had their issues at the plate this season scoring just 3.66 runs per game which ranks 29h in scoring offense, and are hitting just .229 as a team. Dominic Smith leads the Mets with 42 hits and 19 RBI while Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso have combined for 72 hits and 36 RBI.

The Mets are still sputtering at the plate, which has been a season-long issue. The Padres are a bit more productive at the plate and that gives them the edge here.
